A Kaiser Health News analysis of federal data published Sept. 9 highlights an increasing trend among hospitals — establishing independent, nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center "look-alikes" (LAL) for primary care patients to improve their financial picture. At least eight hospitals and health systems have converted or built new clinics designated as LALs from 2019-2022, including two of our clients, Parrish Medical Center (FL) and St. Luke’s University Health Network (PA). In correlation with these major healthcare providers and attorneys, Contemporary Health Care, Inc. was extensively involved in the LAL strategic planning process from Day One and developed, prepared, and submitted the comprehensive LAL applications, subsequently approved by HHS/HRSA the federal oversight agency.
